In 2016, Riikka Neste, a visionary artist hailing from Finland, embarked on a captivating photographic series that defies conventional norms and celebrates the intrinsic connection between art and nature. Shot in the traditional 35mm film format, Neste’s photographs exude an aura of unpredictability, each frame bearing the imprint of a unique and transformative process.

Prior to developing the negatives, Neste immersed the film in a concoction known as ‘film soup,’ a blend of water sourced from the River Ebro, crushed olives, and soil collected from her residency finca. Through this unconventional method, the local nature and land became ‘co-creators’ of the images, leaving their indelible mark on the final compositions.

As the film developed, the photographs emerged adorned with stains and burns, tangible evidence of the symbiotic relationship between artist and environment. Within each frame, local people and places come to life, infused with an ethereal quality that transcends mere representation.

From the serene waters of the Poli to the bustling Carrer Sant Roc, Neste’s lens captures the essence of Riba-roja d’Ebre, inviting viewers to embark on a visual journey through the heart of the community. Through her innovative approach to photography, Riikka Neste not only documents the beauty of the local landscape but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the profound interconnectedness between humans and their natural surroundings.

‘I am a 21 year old artist from Finland. My artistic practice focuses on photography. I am interested in pushing the boundaries of traditional photographic methods. For example, manipulating the film development process in different ways. I am currently living and studying art in Scotland.’
